I am often very critical in the mechanics of writing as too many errors can impact really badly on the reader and their desire to keep reading. I also concentrate on the storyline pace and character development. Any reviews provided by me are honest and encouraging but are not designed to be wishy washy with kindness - my aim is to help not destroy!!! |
I try to be honest and positive. My Christian faith is an important background factor. I hate rating low but have a system that determines how I grade.

I have experience looking for consistency. I fully believe in Keep It Simple & Succinct. ![]() |
I like a review that makes me edit, even if it bothers me or offends me. So I look at your piece with, "What would I change to make this better and why?" And I write down most of what I think... the limit being how much you paid, more than how much you can handle! And of course there's no guarantee that my advice won't make it worse. Well, except the long list of bestseller credits-- oh, I haven't published them yet. But feel free to request a refund if I really like your piece. It's happened, sometimes I'm in too good of a mood and I think your work is perfect. If it was, you'd be submitting it for a royalty advance... praise is nice but it's like Chinese food, you need more in an hour. Whereas critique sticks to your ribs... |
Not sure I have a style....I learn as much from you as you from me. I will point our typos, grammatical things if I see them. I love poetry and when it comes to stories, please nothing "dark"....not my thing. |
I like to say how I relate to an item. Spelling and grammar are less important. |
I try my best to read everything on Writing.com with great care. My reviews always include a first impression, my feelings about theme and structure and where appropriate, some thoughts about possible revisions.![]() |
I have a form I use for reviews. I look for a Goal, Motivation, Conflict and Resolution. It also allows me to tell what I liked and what I thinks needs improving. In my reviews I may make suggestions by adding my take on what the author is trying to say. Purely a suggestion to take or leave as needed. |
I like to go in depth on how I felt whilst reading it. I'll point out where I was tripped out of my flow by sentence structure or oddity. What confuses me. What intrigues me.
Examples can be seen in my recent reviews.
Happy to review privately on request. Default will be public.

My reviewing style varies. I may do a little edit if possible or pinpoint what I think is incorrect. My review is merely base on what I feel about your piece. If I enjoy it, I say it. If not, I tell you why I'm not.
I often do reviews on all Poetry Items- regardless of the genres, styles and the way it was written. However if you like, you can request a short story, chapter not the entire book or novel, articles and essays, etc.

My review style is personal, structured, and emotionally driven. I aim to balance honest praise with thoughtful, constructive critique, always offering suggestions that help strengthen the work. I try to keep my tone respectful and supportive because I believe feedback should encourage, not discourage. My goal is to help writers grow, not just improve one piece. |
I am meticulous about trying to give some useful pointers as feedback, if not about writing, at least about what I felt when I read the piece. I will not do line-by-line edits but will give examples of the typos or errors, if seen at all. I prefer not to read explicit details or abusive language although I will review anything asked, personal preference disregarded. My own forte is for writing short stories, observational humour. But if I review what is outside my capacity or comfort zone, I research the norms before commenting. I do not intend to hurt or denigrate, for I respect writing too much to do so. Nor do I feel I review except as fellow word-lover and writing-student. If I forget a commitment, feel free to knock on my door to remind me! |
I am thorough. The technical aspects are important to me as much as if the story makes sense. The word "cruel" has been used before when responding to a review I've given, but in an appreciative and kind way. |
My opinion will rely heavily on content, character and story arc, and reflect anything that catches my eye...purely from a readers standpoint. |
I'm honest when I review thing I'll say what's on my mind but at the same time I try to stay positive and will always tell you what you did right but this means in no way am I a professional reviewer so take my reviews with a grin of salt please |
When I review something, I look for grammar and it's content. I can say what you miss or what you need. |
Unsentimental. I focus on the kinds of craft issues that will keep a writer from being taken seriously and prevent them from fully expressing their vision.

I'm honest but constructive. I'll explain why I give the number of stars I give and what you could do to improve that. I do fix grammar as well as look at style, emotional triggers, characters, and other things like that. I'll get back to you with a full review in a couple of days or so after the request, depending on the length of the item. |
I'll read your writing, and dissect it line-for-line adjusting any grammar, flow, spelling, etc. I will also give my general opinion of your piece. I will never insult you and will point out the good and the bad. I am very nit picky so if you don't like that then I suggest you move on. However, I believe I am capable of improving your writing technique, quality and overall style. |
I will not give a very structured review; It will be just me typing out what I think about the piece, generally how well I think it accomplished its goals, what I think the goals are, and also generally a couple of notes on possible minor tweaks to the piece to make it slightly better. |
